Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
