Our team is checking video footage and photographs circulated this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site of where the pictures originated was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
