Line of Duty Confirmed for Seventh Season on BBC
The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.
The actress expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."
The last series concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived this week.
New Challenges for The Team
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."
Fresh Face and Complex Case
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.
Yet, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.
Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."
Show History
Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.
The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
