Norris Edges Nearer to Title as Max Verstappen Secures Las Vegas Grand Prix Victory
Lando Norris now leads a thirty point advantage over teammate Oscar Piastri with only fifty-eight points available in the final two races
The McLaren Lando Norris stepped nearer to a maiden world title with runner-up position in the Las Vegas Grand Prix following the Red Bull of Max Verstappen
Norris now leads teammate Oscar Piastri, who finished in fourth place behind the Mercedes of George Russell, by thirty points heading to the second-to-last race in Qatar this coming weekend
Norris will secure the title in the desert as long as he doesn't surrender more than five points to Piastri in Losail, or seventeen to Verstappen
Piastri, so impressive in the first half of the season, has failed to finish on the top three for six consecutive events
"Verstappen had a strong performance. I made the mistake at the beginning and was too punchy on that first turn," stated Norris
"It's still a positive outcome to secure second place. I've got to congratulate Verstappen and Red Bull"
After Qatar, the final race of the championship follows in Abu Dhabi on December 7th
The main developments of one of Formula 1's most high-profile races included:
Lando Norris continued his progress towards the title despite the victory to Max Verstappen
Oscar Piastri's challenging run of form continued as his championship chances wane
A excellent win for Verstappen to maintain him in the title fight
Fightbacks for both Ferrari drivers, following a tough qualifying session, with Lewis Hamilton claiming a single point for tenth place following starting at the back
Max Verstappen Remains in Title Contention
Max Verstappen overtakes Norris at the start following the McLaren driver went off line at the opening turn
From the beginning, Lando Norris was true to his statement that he was "not here to avoid risks" as he battled aggressively to defend his lead from starting first from Verstappen
But after an aggressive move in front of the Red Bull driver to head off the Dutchman's challenge on the inside, Norris misjudged his braking point and ran deep into the corner
This enabled Verstappen to overtake into the lead while the British driver also the runner-up spot to Russell
Through two VSC periods for several opening-lap incidents, including at the beginning when Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson collided with Piastri, Verstappen slowly established dominance on the race
George Russell undertook an early pit stop for the more durable compound, but Norris and Verstappen remained on track
Norris pitted five laps after the Mercedes driver and Verstappen 10
The Red Bull driver was able to return still in the first place, George Russell having been failed to close in on the Red Bull even with his fresher tyres
Norris rejoined after Russell from his pit stop but after a several careful circuits to let his tires to settle, soon reduced his three-point-three second gap to the Mercedes and overtook into runner-up position on the thirty-fourth lap
Norris asked his race engineer how to run the remainder of his race, effectively asking whether he should accept second or challenge for the lead
He was told to "go and get Verstappen" but it soon became clear he had little opportunity. Max Verstappen was readily able to repel Lando's attacks, and in the final laps the margin increased significantly as the McLaren began to suffer a mechanical problem which has thus far remained unidentified
Even with dropping almost three seconds a lap, Lando Norris was could defend against George Russell because of the size of the lead he had built while pursuing Max Verstappen
The Red Bull driver's sixth win of the championship - just one behind both McLaren teammates - was taken in dominant fashion and keeps him in title contention, at minimum theoretically, even if he requires problems for Norris in both remaining races to pass him
"It's still a significant margin, we consistently attempt to optimize all we've have," Verstappen said
"During the coming events we will attempt to take victory in the event and by the conclusion of Abu Dhabi we will know where we end up, but I'm very proud of the entire team"
Disappointing Race' for Piastri
Piastri began fifth but lost two places on the first circuit after being hit by Lawson, who was quickly taken out of the battle by a damaged front wing
He trailed Liam Lawson's teammate Isack Hadjar for the first 15 laps before overtaking him on the Las Vegas Strip but also out to Leclerc, who he was able to repass during the pit-stop period
The Australian ended up after Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who competed almost the entire race on the durable compound after stopping during the initial VSC, but was given a five-second penalty for a starting procedure infringement, which was not clearly visible on video reviews
"It proved to be a frustrating event from essentially start to finish in some ways," Piastri told race broadcasters
Questioned about how he would approach the remaining events, he commented: "Simply attempt to put myself in the best position I can. I obviously require several of things to go my way at this stage to win, but all I can do is ensure I'm in the best position to capitalise if something happens"
Charles Leclerc held on in sixth position, insufficiently close to gain from Antonelli's penalty, while Carlos Sainz fell to seventh place at the finish, his Williams lacking the pace to compete with the leading outfits in the dry conditions, after his impressive performance to qualify third in the wet
Hadjar took eighth place before the Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg and Lewis Hamilton
The seven-time champion executed a flying start, rising to thirteenth on the first lap and continued to advance positions
He got stuck in a slipstream group with a bunch of additional vehicles but was could employ his strong beginning to rescue a point after the worst qualifying session of his career
