One of the Avatar-themed cutest Magic cards proves to be a powerful little contender.

Magic: The Gathering’s collaboration with Avatar will not hit the general market before the end of the week, yet following early access events this past weekend, a low-cost green spell saw a sharp rise in market worth.

Throughout the spoiler season, the earthbending cub drew a lot of attention. A 2/2 requiring a single green and one generic mana, the card includes the Earthbend 1 ability (arguably the most effective of the set’s four “bending” mechanics). The real boon here comes from its second ability: If mana is generated by tapping a creature, it provides bonus green mana.

Initially, Badgermole Cub sold below $30. Post-prerelease, though, the going rate has shot up to nearly $50 including listings for sale at $60.00. The reason for premium pricing on this adorable card? Mainly because of the rapid resource generation it can produce.

When it arrives play, this creature turns one land to a creature land that has earthbending. And with that second ability, if it remains on the board, each affected land yields two mana instead of one — plus mana-producing creatures on your side that produce resources.

An ideal partner for maximum effect is this one-mana elf, a cheap 1/1 that taps to generate one green mana. However many creatures that make mana out there. This particular druid is a more expensive alternative that’s a 1/3 at a two-mana value in comparison.

By playing lands, creatures that tap for mana, and Badgermole Cub, you may quickly play a massive pricey threat into play by round three or four. And things just keep spiraling rapidly if you keep the pressure on after that.

By incorporating an additional hue with this approach, examples including these mana-fixing creatures are excellent picks which produce any color of mana. And something like a useful enchantment creature enables playing an additional land each turn plus makes your entire land base into every basic land type. It's also worth trying for example a card called A Realm Reborn, at a six-mana investment gives each permanent you control the capacity to tap and generate a mana of any type — which covers all creatures you have on the board.

The cub may be OP regarding boosting mana production, however how do you win for a deck like this? A common and powerful choice is this legendary creature. Its stats are both equal to your land count, and it changes your non-token creatures Forests in addition to other subtypes. This means, each creature on your board may tap for two G if used for mana.

Another creature is a costly, large threat that benefits from lots of lands (similar to Ashaya, P/T are based on how many lands you have).

This Planeswalker fits really well in this deck. Her static effect allows Forest lands tap for one more G. (With a Badgermole Cub, so those lands yield three G.) Her main ability functions like a form of land animation, placing counters to a noncreature land, handy but does not overlap with earthbending. Her -8 ability, however, grants each land you control indestructible and allows you to search for all the remaining forests in your deck. Should you manage to use that ability, this typically means game over.

Badgermole Cub is nearly mandatory for all decks using green and Avatar that use earthbend. By including red and green, there’s Bumi. It possesses level 4 earthbending, and if he deals combat damage to an opponent, all land creatures become untapped and may attack once more. While that version is a beloved leader, the cub is set to be one of, if not the most desired card in the collaboration.
