The State of Texas Attorney General Files Lawsuit Against Tylenol Makers Over Autism Claims

Legal Proceedings
Ken Paxton, a Trump ally campaigning for US Senate, accused pharmaceutical manufacturers of withholding potential dangers of Tylenol

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is filing a lawsuit against the manufacturers of Tylenol, alleging the corporations hid potential risks that the drug created to pediatric neurological development.

This legal action arrives thirty days after Donald Trump publicized an unverified association between taking acetaminophen - also known as paracetamol - while pregnant and autism spectrum disorder in offspring.

Paxton is taking legal action against the pharmaceutical giant, which once produced the drug, the only pain reliever approved for expectant mothers, and the current manufacturer, which presently makes it.

In a declaration, he stated they "deceived the public by profiting off of suffering and promoting medication regardless of the risks."

Kenvue asserts there is lacking scientific proof connecting acetaminophen to autism.

"These manufacturers misled for generations, deliberately risking millions to boost earnings," the attorney general, a Republican, stated.

The manufacturer commented that it was "deeply concerned by the perpetuation of misinformation on the safety of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the health of women and children in America."

On its website, the company also stated it had "regularly reviewed the applicable studies and there is no credible data that demonstrates a established connection between consuming acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder."

Associations acting on behalf of physicians and healthcare providers agree.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has declared acetaminophen - the main ingredient in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for expectant mothers to manage pain and fever, which can pose serious health risks if ignored.

"In over twenty years of studies on the use of acetaminophen in gestation, no reliable research has conclusively proven that the use of acetaminophen in any stage of pregnancy causes neurological conditions in offspring," the association said.

The lawsuit mentions current declarations from the former administration in arguing the medication is allegedly unsafe.

Recently, the former president generated worry from public health officials when he instructed expectant mothers to "fight like hell" not to take acetaminophen when sick.

The US Food and Drug Administration then published an announcement that doctors should think about restricting the usage of acetaminophen, while also declaring that "a proven link" between the drug and autism in young ones has remains unverified.

The Health Department head Robert F Kennedy Jr, who oversees the FDA, had pledged in April to initiate "a massive testing and research effort" that would identify the origin of autism spectrum disorder in a matter of months.

But experts cautioned that finding a single cause of autism spectrum disorder - believed by scientists to be the consequence of a intricate combination of inherited and external influences - would be difficult.

Autism spectrum disorder is a type of enduring cognitive variation and condition that influences how people perceive and relate to the environment, and is identified using physician assessments.

In his lawsuit, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is running for the Senate - claims Kenvue and J&J "willfully ignored and tried to quiet the science" around paracetamol and autism.

This legal action aims to force the corporations "remove any marketing or advertising" that asserts Tylenol is secure for pregnant women.

The court case parallels the complaints of a collection of mothers and fathers of minors with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who took legal action against the producers of Tylenol in recently.

Judicial authorities dismissed the case, declaring research from the family's specialists was lacking definitive proof.
